= 1. Keep Business out of Sunday?=20 <= /TD>
= While on the air on a recent Sunday night radio show, I rece= ived the following email message:

Hi, You probably won't want to read this on the air, but I thought I'd a= sk it anyway... I would like to listen to your show, but am put off because= it's on Sunday, and I have made the commitment (since I'm a Christian) not= to do "business" stuff on Sundays... Any chance you might consider doing i= t on a different nite? ;-) Thanks!

I did answer it on the air =96 and would love to expand even a little more = here.

This is a legitimate question and certainly a challenge I take seriously. = My Dad was a pastor and I grew up with a very strict view of reverencing th= e Sabbath. I was not even allowed to play ball or ride my bike on Sunday a= fternoons because it was too much exertion. We never purchased gas or went= to a restaurant on Sunday as that would require someone else to be working= . We spent the day quietly and restfully =96 outside of attending morning = and evening church services.

I still honor and respect Sundays as being a special time of reverence. Jo= anne and I have always enjoyed the day just relaxing, reading and worshippi= ng. But here=92s where talking about =93work=94 gets tricky. All of the 4= 8 Days materials originated in a Sunday School class. When I first began t= eaching I had no plans to create actual books and CDs. I was simply respond= ing to the requests to help people understand fulfilling God=92s purpose in= their lives Monday through Friday =96 in addition to what they did on Sund= ay.

That first Sunday School class grew until we could not manage it as a 45-mi= nute meeting in-between sermons. We moved it to a two-hour time slot to al= low more room and time. But the concepts presented there are exactly the s= ame as what I present in response to callers on our Sunday night show now. = I no longer teach a Sunday morning class to the 60-70 people who would cro= wd in the room. Instead, I have the wonderful privilege of having an open = classroom, called radio, where we have thousands of people looking for hope= , encouragement and direction. In addition to the live listeners around th= e country, our podcast team tells me we had 689,708 downloads of the radio = show in the month of May alone.

Some of you may think I=92m just rationalizing what makes good business sen= se, and perhaps I am. But I make no distinction between my work and my pla= y, or my ministry and my work. They all blend together.

If you are still living with a separation of your work and your spiritualit= y, you=92re missing out on a great opportunity. I know of no better format = for displaying our integrity, morality, compassion and virtue than while im= mersed in our work. If we view work as a necessary evil, then by all means = let=92s keep it out of Sunday. But if our work or business is the most vis= ible application of who we are, then perhaps it=92s okay to discuss princip= les for excellence =96 in the same way that we would discuss excellence in = parenting, marriages, or orthodoxy on Sundays. Making more money is simply= a by-product of figuring out how to provide more service to others.

Here=92s a quotation from James Michener that I have used as a goal persona= lly, and with many clients over the years that may explain it better:

The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his = work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his in= formation and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows w= hich is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he d= oes, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he = is always doing both. James Michener

Thanks for the question =96 that=92s probably more than you wanted to hear!= And yes, that's the little country church I went to as a boy. Lots of gr= eat memories there! And I got to pull the rope to ring the bell twice each= Sunday morning. You could hear it for miles.

= 2. How Can I Choose the Life I Love....=20 <= /TD>
= Here are a couple of recent reader questions:

Question:
Dan, In last week's weekly tips you said, "Choose the life you want firs= t. Find the community where you=92d like to live. As important as I think w= ork is, I still see it as simply one tool for a successful life. Map out th= e ideal life, then find or create work that embraces that life." My quest= ion is this: At 42 years old, with a $40,000 per year salary, $20,000 doll= ars in consumer debt, no retirement money saved whatsoever, and getting old= er every day, how can I afford to choose the life that I love? How will I e= ver get ahead now?

Dan=92s Response:
Chuck,
How can you afford NOT to? I have to believe that finding your ideal life = releases more freedom and more money. Staying in something unfulfilling st= ifles your best resources. Every day you spend knowing you are off track i= s a day squandered =96 that could have been spent living a better life.
You don't have to burn any bridges to do the dreaming and planning =96 get = clear on what the ideal would be -- then all you have to do is create a pla= n of action, complete with a timeline.

Sincerely, Dan

Question:
Dan, Need your advise . I am transitioning in Dubai after 15 years of pr= ofessional experience in India. I joined a company as their call centre man= ager --Telemarketing unit. Well, the Call Centre after 3months has not tak= en off at all after the effort. The Co is now moving me into other fields = without re-designating and reworking the compensation. Also I am feeling e= xploited as the call centre did not work, they are trying to leverage me in= sales and marketing. Please advise. I am confused and in a Chaos.
=
Dan=92s Response:
Dear Confused,
It's healthy at any time to draw a line in the sand -- and take a fresh loo= k at who you are and where you're going. If you see yourself as "self-empl= oyed" you can move away from feeling trapped or victimized by any one compa= ny. By looking at your (1)Skills & Abilities, (2) Personality Traits, and = (3) Values, Dreams and Passions you should be able to see some clear patter= ns emerge. Then you can identify work that embraces all of those. The com= pany can't move you without your willingness to be moved. If that's not a = good fit for you, then do a professional job search immediately to uncover = some better options.

Sincerely, Dan

= 3. Everything I Know About Business I Learned From My Mama= =20 <= /TD>
= Last week, Tim Knox, my radio show co-host, launched the rel= ease of his new book, Everything I Know About Business I Learned from= my Mama.

What happened is a perfect example of how we teach the importance of market= ing. Writing a book is 10% of the process =96 Marketing effectively is the= other 90%. Over 200 other Internet marketers participated in his promotio= n =96 offering free bonuses to help build their own lists. But the combina= tion made a powerfully attractive offer for anyone, just for buying a $13.7= 7 book.

Within hours of the email notices going out Tim=92s book surpassed lots and= lots of well-known and respected business books to take over the #1 spot o= n Amazon =96 where it then stayed for 3 days. This was not some fluke even= t. This exact occurrence was carefully planned for approximately 6 months = ago.

If you missed the book and bonuses, you can still get them here. And don= =92t just buy the book =96 learn from the process Tim has used to market an= d position his information. You can do the same for your product or servic= e.

= Okay, this reminds me of some of the resumes I see =96 where= the Walmart greeter shows up as the Customer Service Manager for a Fort= une 500 company, or the taxi-cab driver describes himself as the log= istics director for large transportation company.
Check this out:

An amateur genealogical researcher discovered that his great-great uncle, R= emus Starr, a fellow lacking in character, was hanged for horse stealing an= d train robbery in Montana in 1889. The only known photograph of Remus show= s him standing on the gallows. On the back of the picture is this inscripti= on:

"Remus Starr; horse thief; sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped= 1887; robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives. = Convicted and hanged 1889."

In a Family History subsequently written by the researcher, Remus=92s pictu= re is cropped so that all that's seen is a head shot. The accompanying biog= raphical sketch is as follows:

"Remus Starr was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory. His business emp= ire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate = dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1885, he devoted several y= ears of his life to service at a government facility, finally taking leave = to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a= vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 188= 9, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor w= hen the platform upon which he was standing collapsed."
