= Wel= come! And what's new... =
=09=09=09=09=09=09=09=09=09=09=09=09=09= =09
= Dear = Kevin,

In last week=92s newsletter I mentioned that every year at about this time = I reevaluate everything I=92m doing =96 asking if it=92s still a useful and= effective use of my time. As part of that helpful process I have decided = to change from my current radio show to a more effective use of technology.=

It appears that about 95% of our listeners are using the podcast to listen = during the week, rather than listening to the live show on Sunday evenings.= Consequently, Tim and I are going to be doing a live webinar on Tuesday e= venings at 7:00 PM CDT in place of the Sunday show. We will still be able = to take live email questions and you will be able to listen to the live sho= w no matter where you live -- not just in Nashville, TN.

Yes, there are people who think we=92re crazy to give up a prime spot on a = 100,000 watt talk radio station =96 but that=92s why it=92s important to lo= ok at what you=92re doing. What made sense a year ago may not make sense t= oday.

In next week=92s newsletter I=92ll share the details =96 and how you can be= a part of this exciting new technology.

= 1. I Dare You To Try This...=20 <= /TD>
= I talk to people each week who desperately long for a new jo= b or would like to start their own business. But when I suggest they inves= t in a coaching session or a $19 book they recoil in horror. Some state th= at they don=92t want to spend any time or money =96 they just want me to te= ll them what to do. A recent 48 Days purchaser wrote =93I don=92t want to = spend the time figuring out how to use this book. Isn=92t there an easier = way?=94 I apologized that I didn=92t know any real shortcut =96 he=92d hav= e to actually read the book and apply it to his situation.

It perplexes me to think that anyone expects to get a great job or start a = successful business without first putting forth a little effort. I=92ve ne= ver seen success sneak up on someone; rather, I see it come as a result of = having a clear personalized plan of action, and then investing the hard wor= k and resources to allow success to come into view.

I=92m told that if you put a turkey buzzard in a pen that is 8=92 x 8=92 an= d is entirely open at the top, the bird, while we know it can fly, will rem= ain a prisoner in that pen. The reason is that a massive bird like that ca= nnot take off straight up. It has to have a run of 10-12=92 to have the mo= mentum to take off. Without space to run, it will not even attempt to fly,= but will remain a prisoner in that small jail, even with an open sky right= above its head.

I=92ve never seen success operate any differently. Athletes don=92t become= superstars overnight, actors don=92t go directly to Broadway, most busines= s people try 3 or 4 things before finding one that works, and most first jo= bs are little more than a learning process. You can=92t fly without first = running and you can=92t get to success without investing time, effort and m= oney.

I just registered for a one-day seminar in New York City on September 5th. = I paid $1250 plus airfare and hotel to spend one day in a room with 55 oth= er thinkers. Why do I so willingly continue to do things like this? Becau= se I don=92t see it as an expense, but an investment. If I spend $2000 on = a big screen TV, I=92ll never recapture that money =96 it begins to disappe= ar immediately. But if I spend $2000 on books, coaching or seminars, exper= ience tells me I can perhaps make $200,000 from the ideas and new knowledge= I=92ll get. I=92ve seen that played out time after time.

I expect all my high-achieving clients to read, listen and apply helpful pr= inciples. Unfortunately, I see lots of others who say they want more succe= ss. But I see them buy a new car, a new lawnmower, a new boat, while sayin= g they can=92t =93afford=94 a book or tape set. Why do you think their suc= cess is blocked?

I would propose that if you commit to reading and listening to positive mat= erials for 30 minutes a day for 6 months, you can expect to double your inc= ome. I=92d love to have several of you take me up on that challenge =96 do= cument it and let me know. If you succeed, I=92ll buy your lunch so I can = learn from your story. If you fail, I=92ll buy your lunch so I can learn f= rom your story.

Decide what you=92re willing to put into the process of bringing new succes= s into your life. If you don=92t allow yourself enough room to run, you= =92ll never fly.

"If you work hard at your job, you can make a living; but if you work= hard on yourself, you can make a fortune." =96Anonymous

= 2. Laid Off -- Don=92t Do This=20 <= /TD>
= Being laid off is often one of life=92s great traumas. It s= hould not be a complete surprise in today=92s workplace environment =96 we= =92re on track to see over 1,000,000 layoffs this year. Frequently people = who have been laid off or fired experience the same emotional stages as tho= se who are divorcing or in the early stages of a terminal illness: anger, = resentment, denial, feeling betrayed, and hopelessness.

Here are some quick =93don=92ts=94 if this is your situation:
  • Don=92t make major personal decisions. Don=92t sell your house, mo= ve back in with in-laws, quit your club memberships, and cancel your family= vacations for the next 10 years.

  • Don=92t rest on your severance. More and more I am seeing companies su= rprisingly generous in the severance packages they are giving. Use this ti= me as a springboard to move forward. But don=92t use this as an excuse to = hide out and ignore the transition required.

  • Don=92t wallow in the bad news about layoffs. No matter what=92s happe= ning in the economy, companies are looking for great people. Be prepared t= o =93sell=94 your benefit to them.

  • Don=92t hide out in the house. Yes, it=92s easy to catch up on all th= ose little things that need to be done, but it=92s also easy to use these a= s an excuse for an active job search.

  • Don=92t assume you have to change careers. I find many people who assu= me their previous industry or profession is the only one changing. All ind= ustries and professions are changing dramatically. You may find your best = opportunity in a subtle change in your own field.

= Here=92s another great article by my radio co-host, Tim Knox= . Here Tim compares managing employees to herding cats -- you'll be surpri= sed how similar it really is.

Tim offers some clear tips for finding those "winners" and "keepers."

= A pastor put sanitary hot air hand dryers in the rest rooms = at his church =96 but after two weeks requested they be taken out.

When asked why he confessed that they worked fine but when he went in there= he saw a sign that read,

"For a sample of this week's sermon, push the button."
