Joanne and I are
spending this week in Colorado with Kevin and his family. The mix
of business and family visiting make this trip both enjoyable and
useful. We’ll be doing lots of playing with 5 grandchildren and
visiting my publisher in Colorado Springs. Kevin and I are planning
this next year of providing more benefits for the 48 Days members.
And we’re checking out the progress on the construction of their new
straw
house. Yes you read that right – a straw house. It’s more
common than you might think, in spite of the lesson Kevin
apparently missed about the three little pigs.

going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called
Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day." --

One of the great
thinkers of the world was Plato. In describing his primary
philosophy he compared people to prisoners chained in a cave. There
is only a small fire illuminating our environment. The only reality
we know is that tiny space in our cave. But every now and then some
cave dweller breaks free from the chains, steps out of the cave and
is immediately blinded by the light. He can only see a blurry
version of the Truth because his eyes cannot adjust to what all he
sees. Eventually though, he will see a new reality that his old
comrades cannot. So the enlightened individual returns to the cave
and tries to tell the others what they are missing. Now here's
where it gets interesting. Will he be welcomed with open arms? Will
his old comrades thank him for sharing his new insights and
opportunities? Not according to Plato. He suggests that the
"prophet will be killed by his former colleagues -- which
history appears to confirm.
So 2300 years later -- are you surprised when your former
co-workers think you're stupid for suggesting you can survive
without a "real job" with "real benefits?" Or
for believing that you can take your idea for making a better yo-yo
and turn it into real income? Or for building a straw house (like
my son Kevin is doing in Colorado). Don't you remember the three
little pigs? Well, sometimes old fairy tales just aren't true.
Don't expect your great idea to be embraced by all the old cave
dwellers. There will always be whiners, naysayers, and small
thinkers. If you're on a different path you can expect criticism,
ridicule and laughter as they huddle around their little but
familiar fire. Just don't let them kill you -- or your idea. Keep
looking for more light.
Make this the year you find your light!

Every once in a while a
story comes through that seems made for the movies. For seven years
waitress Melina Salazar did her best in caring for her customers –
even the most cantankerous ones. Apparently her biggest challenge
was 89-year-old Walter “Buck” Swords. She made sure his food was
hot and she just smiled through his demands and frequent cursing.
(Reminds me of Helen Hunt in As Good As It Gets with the
unreasonable Jack Nicholson.)
Well, ole “Buck” just died and left his waitress Melina $50,000 and
his 2000 Buick. She says, “I still can’t believe it.”
Now – how would you treat each customer of yours today, or each
student, or every co-worker if you knew there was the possibility
that one of them would leave you $50,000 and a Buick? Why don’t you
just try it for three days? Who knows how your payoff may appear?

I’m continuing to browse
through the hundreds of questions that come in each week. I trust
that answering these provides some clarification both for the
person submitting the question and for thousands more of you who
are likely challenged by the same issue.
Just click on this 48
Days Online Radio link and you can ask about resumes,
interviewing, at-home business or finding your purpose in life.
That’s the same place you can listen to this week’s broadcast
immediately – no downloading – no wait. 48 Days Online Radio
Here are a few of the questions I addressed this week:
- Do you think it is
a good idea to move to improve your quality of life? My
husband and I have lived in southern California all our lives.
We have a huge mortgage on a tiny house and everything is so
crowded here. The only drawback is that most of our extended
family is here. What do you think?
- My husband works
for the government. Need I go any further? Anyway, he has a
relatively successful job as a manager, making good money with
great benefits. There are some parts of his job that he enjoys
doing, but the other parts are unbearable. He won't look for
anything else because of the benefits--retirement,
time-off--and feels he can "start his life" after he
retires at around age 55. What would you recommend?
- I am 53 and have
been in the residential construction & remodeling business
for 25 years. I'm in the red because of economy slow down
& family health cost. I want to go to work in a company
where I can use my years of experience to advantage for them
& myself. I will have bills that will stay with me for
being so far behind so I have to look at a position with a
salary to support both a living & debt recovery. I've not
looked for a job in a long time -- so what do I do to change
my life?
- I am interested in
expanding my ministry. I already have a website, but I want to
start a podcast that has my sermons and music on it. I want to
do a weekly newsletter to pastors and encourage them to catch
my podcast. I've looked at podcast sites to help me start
this, but I like your format. Can you recommend me to the
people I need to talk with?
- I took your advice
and sent an email to a company I was interested in. I simply
told them about myself and asked them what I would need to do
to get into their field. In 37hrs and 8 minutes I had received
a job offer for my dream job, and it was one of those jobs in
the hidden job market you speak of. Your technique really
works. Thank you so much!!! And praise God!!!
You can submit your question right now – I’ll work as many in as
possible for this week's broadcast. 48 Days Online Radio

A young man asked an old
rich man how he made his money.
The old guy fingered his worsted wool vest and said, "Well,
son, it was 1932, the depth of the Great Depression. I was down to
my last nickel. I invested that nickel in an apple. I spent the
entire day polishing the apple and, at the end of the day, I sold
the apple for ten cents.
The next morning, I invested those ten cents in two apples. I spent
the entire day polishing them and sold them at 5:00 pm for 20
cents. I continued this system for a week, by the end of which I'd
accumulated a fortune of $6.40
Then my wife's father died and left us two million dollars."

Promote
Your Business Here
I receive many, many requests from people who would like me to
promote their book, product or service to our readers. For seven
years I have resisted doing that. However, many of them in fact are
products that would benefit our 48 Days readers. So beginning now,
for 2008, I am going to open the door, just a crack, to allow 4
businesses each week to be promoted here and on the 48 Days Online
Radio broadcast. The business has to be related to what we are
already doing – no lingerie or shampoos please. Yes, there is a fee
for this -- You can submit your request here: 48 Days Promotion
48 Days Seminars
For many years I have received requests from Coaches, Schools and
Churches to provide a curriculum to teach the 48 Days Principles.
The demand for "Career" coaching and guidance is as
rampant in our popular culture as the desire for weight loss and
financial help. So we've created a turnkey workshop series complete
with me teaching on DVD to “coach” your church, business, or
organization through the 48 Days Curriculum. All you need is a
time, a place and a DVD player and you can bring the 48 Days
program to help them find the ‘Work They Love.’ Would you become
one of our champions and introduce us to your church, university,
business, or organization and together we will partner to bring
this life changing information to your community. Just send an
email with your name, your contact information, the church or
organization name and decision maker’s information to our National
Seminar Director Alan Thomas at seminars@48days.com.
As our thank you for helping us, you will instantly receive a link
for your e-copy of my popular book, The Rudder of the Day.
